Karate can be a fun and rewarding activity. The Black Belt Academy provides Taekwondo training for kids (starting at 3 years old) to adults. Each program is designed to meet the maturity level of the student. Positive attitude is always stressed as well as self control and respect.
Beginners start off at white belt and progress through the 9 colored belts (White to Red) to Black Belt Recommend (Red and Black Belts). Recommend Black Belts then test to become “Decided” 1st Degree Black Belts.
While attaining a Black Belt is the end of the “colored belts” it doesn’t mean the end of learning. 1st Degree Black belts then continue into 2nd degree, 3rd degree and so on. How far a student goes is up to the individual.
FAQ:
Q. My child is not very athletic and out of shape. Can he/she do karate?
A. Yes, anyone can do karate however, you should first consult with your child’s physician before starting any exercise program. Karate is an excellent way to get into shape.
Q. My child is not good at/dislikes competitive team sports. What makes karate different?
A. Karate is a very individual sport. There is no pressure to “perform for the team”. You’re child won’t get pushed out of the way by the jock who had to score. Doing your best is the measure for success. Those who want to compete can do so at the many tournaments held locally, regional and nationally. Even when you compete, you’re child do it against others of the same rank and ability. The only person who always wins is you’re child (you).
Q. Isn’t karate violent?
A. Yes and NO. Karate is a form of self defense so it has techniques that can
be considered by some to be “violent”. HOWEVER, karate also teaches self control and respect for others. The probability of your child being a victim of a bully (or being a bully is) significantly reduced because he/she has be taught to ONLY use karate on another person under the direct supervision of an instructor OR if the student’s physical well being is in danger. Sparring (the supervised “fighting” between students), is designed to have minimal contact. That is, a “touch” is only needed to score points. This kind of sparring is called “point sparring”. Contact that is excessive is not tolerated. Another kind of sparring is called “testing sparring”. This kind of sparring is used to show techniques, not score points. During testing sparring NO contact is allowed.
Students “test spar” during graduation. Although there is no contact, protective gear must be worn.
